WordPress Plugin Triggering McAfee Alert

During a mundane night of blogging, I was stirred from my reverie by a McAfee alert suggest I was under attack by a trojan, specifically a VBSPsyme VirusSDcan Alert.

It was all hands to battle stations there for awhile, until I realized McAfee was being triggered when I tried to run specific aspects of my Wordpress installation: uploading an image, or swapping from the Visual to the HTML editor.

Upon further investigation, I determined the problem to be the following combination: the Exec-PHP plugin using the Wordpress 3.2.x platform.

If you are having this problem, obviously you won’t want to roll back your Wordpress installation to resolve this issue.

The solution is to simply switch to the PHP Execution plugin. It does the exact same thing, without causing McAfee to throw up a false positive.

How To Update WordPress

Keeping your WordPress installation up to date is a simple procedure these days, and a very necessary one.

Not only does each WordPress update provide a range of great new features, but they often contain a range of security upgrades, keeping your site safe from hackers and various other miscreants.

Before the release of WordPress 2.7 in December 2008, webmasters had to update WordPress manually. Obviously we’re not talking about getting out the hammer and nails… By “manually”, I mean having to manually upload all the new files to your web host using an FTP client. This was often particularly time consuming, especially if you had several different sites.

I had about about 50.

So you can imagine my joy when I discovered that WordPress had included one-click, automatic update functionality!

WordPress now tells you when an update is available, then you simply click a button and get on with your life. It’s just so simple!

But, you know, I’m just so over pushing buttons, aren’t you? Surely the days of WordPress updating itself can’t be far away, right?

Then, if they could just work on that whole automatically-writing-blog-posts-for-me thing, that’d be great.

But in the mean time, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to update WordPress:
